The question is, SIPC-insured against what? Fraud, not the bankruptcy of the fund or the firm.

Just did a little checking into SIPC a few days ago because I was seriously thinking about moving from datek, etrade to a larger house like fidel. A while back I think tradermike said it wasn't worth worring about & I tend to agree. But I made sure datek & etrade were SIPC members. SIPC is not a government agency which bothers me. It is a nonprofit made up of all the brokerage firms & they have a good history of restoring accounts from fraudulent or bankrupt houses. But then again, In a complete MELT ...I think theyed be useless.

<<A broker buddy of mine is trying to tell me that MM funds are SIPC insured>>

That's bullshit...they don't insure against the fund "breaking the buck", only against insolvency of the firm as a whole. Of course, when that happens, good luck collecting!<NFG> However, I know you have a Merril account, and they bought some crappy fleabag bank so they could deposit bagholder money there FDIC insured...I beleive that's called an "ML Banking Advantage account". Well worth asking about, since yer already there.
