The second explanation is, of course, the fair coverage argument, though, given the extensive Israeli coverage on CNN, as compared with coverage of the Palestinians, it's beyond me how anyone could think CNN doesn't defer to the Sharon govt as much as the rest of them.

One thing to remember is that Israelis don't see the same CNN as we do. They see European CNN, which is much more open about its sympathies towards the Palestinians. The Israelis got tired of dry reporting about the number of victims of suicide bombers, combined with sympathetic interviews of the proud bomber's kinfolk. The Israeli cable stations still carry the BBC, which is nearly as bad in its coverage, though I've noticed it has improved somewhat lately.

And how you can say that even American CNN defers to the Sharon govt. is beyond me. I myself have heard them describe "cries for revenge at the funeral of victims of the Israeli army", with nary a mention that it was a Hamas funeral (the flags and banners are unmistakable), or that the four "victims" had been killed on a suicide mission in an Israeli settlement, where they were in the process of killing as many settlers as they could find -- and they got several. Some deference.
