J.F.,

The Church today has lost most of the liberal wing. It's a much more crotchety organization than in the days when I was an altar boy. I remember being riveted by the return of some Catholic "missionaries" returning to our parish in Northern Illinois, and telling of their efforts to help indigenous and poverty stricken people, living in terrible Third World conditions, where they tried to help the people against the local oligarchs and an uncaring local Bishop. The tales of poor sanitation, hunger, egregious unfairness in the local court system and general lack of concern on the part of the better off members of that community really stirred my soul and made me want to live up to the ideals of the Catholic preaching about brotherly love.

Can you guess what Third World area I'm referring to?

It was the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.

-Ray

Went to catholic schools for 15 years and found the opposite and in college humanism seemed to find a place in theology.
