One does what one must do.

Which remark started a whole new train of thought in me about whether there really are things that one must do, and if so, what happens to free will and to personal responsibility.

I know you didn't use the phrase in that context, but if there are indeed things one "must" do, where is the place (or where are the places) where the "must" comes from, and what happens when one recognizes that what one must do is something one should not do.

A whole realm of issues from a simple, everyday phrase we don't usually think about the full meaning of.
