So you bet he's going to be "nice".. He's very vulnerable right now, stuck in the middle of two powerful forces,
extremism and western mandated reform. And he has to make a decision... regressionism or modernism and
moderation.


I read things the same way, so I confess to being puzzled by those who believe all Saudis to be enemies.

To me it makes as little sense as condemning all Americans for the beliefs of (pick one: KKK, Black Panthers, neoNazis, Democrats, Republicans, Californians, whatever turns you off.)

I read the Saudi Arabian situation as very, very complicated right now. The best rendering of it I've read is in the latest issue of Foreign Affairs. I recommend it.

I don't think US foreign policy should attempt to create a clash of civilizations. That's, best I can tell, what Al Qaeda hopes we will do.
