re: I don't believe that the 3 individual Army Groups (north, central, and south) ever consisted of more than 3 million troops all told.

I recall the numbers from the history lessons. The webpage that you pointed to shows around 3.3 mil german troops but it did not provide any info of the occupational forces and reserves in beylorussia, ukrain and russia. In addition to mobalization russia moved 1.6 million troops from the Eastern border with japan at the end of 1941 yet the russian army numbers do not reflect that.

re: And tyrant that Stalin was, I think he was absolutely correct that we were content to see both sides bleed themselves on the Steppes of Russia

Yes and no. Stalin did not care much how many people would die either in Russia or outside but he saw a clear threat in Germany. Russian troops did fight germans before 1941 in Spain.

re: he was not "disarming" his army.

he was. Superior t34s were designed in 1934 yet russian army had only few of those and the most of the russian armed forces were much older and inferior tanks. Russians also had la, yaks and ils planes that were superior to german planes at the time. But again russia had only few of each. When germany invaded Russia it was in the 1st stages of rearming far behind Tuchachevsky's (killed by Stalin before wwii) original plan.

re: and bide their time until they were sufficiently capable of launching their own attack upon Hitler.

that was in the plans but again russia was not ready for the war in 1941.
