G,

Looking at a LT chart of the VIX, it appears that this is an unprecedented phenomenon with the double spike. Anyone have any interpretations of it, or is it meaningful at all?

Regards,

Brian

IC makers lower forecast for wafer demand, says FSA
Semiconductor Business News

SAN JOSE -- Demand for processed wafers increased by a healthy 9% in the second quarter of 2002 over the previous period, but chip makers have lowered their forecast for these products for the remainder of 2002 and 2003, according to a survey released by the Fabless Semiconductor Association (FSA).

Although the survey shows signs that the worst may be over in the IC industry, the Q2 figures also indicate another troublesome sign: the anticipated chip recovery “will be moderate and gradual, with considerable individual company variability,” according to the FSA.

Overall, the returning respondents from the 2002 annual survey expect steady quarter-on-quarter wafer demand increases from the third quarter of 2002 to the second quarter of 2003. The survey included responses from fabless IC design houses and IDMs.

But still, chip makers “have made gradual downward revisions in their quarterly and 2003 annual estimates,” according to the FSA. “Unanticipated change in market demand is the most frequent reason provided for these revisions, followed by design or development delays,” the group said.

Returning respondents from the 2002 annual survey now expect their annual wafer demand to increase by 27% and 38% in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Returning fabless respondents are expecting significantly higher increases in wafer demand, compared to returning IDM respondents.

Survey responses for the Q2 2002 quarterly survey were received from 105 companies, including 71 returning respondents from the 2002 annual survey. The 105 respondents, based upon their Q1 2002 actual wafer demand, represent 52% of foundry wafer starts, according to Semiconductor International Capacity Statistics (SICAS). These respondents also include 25 public fabless companies. Based on Q1 2002 revenues, these public fabless companies represent 60% of total public fabless semiconductor revenues.
