Lucent to Present Network Security Systems, NYT Says (Correct)

(Adds New York Times to first sentence)

San Francisco, Aug. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Lucent Technologies Inc. researchers today will give information about computer security software that could become a free substitute to systems being developed by Microsoft Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc., the New York Times reported.

The software is designed to protect information and increase security when users connect to Web sites and computers at other locations, the paper said. Researchers from Lucent's Bell Labs unit will describe the programs, Factotum and Secure Store, in a paper at the Usenix computer security conference in San Francisco, the paper said.

The new technology doesn't require a central structure, unlike many current systems that keep personal data private, the paper said. The researchers presenting the paper designed the new programs to be convertible to Windows, Macintosh and Unix systems, the paper said.

The researchers said the programs store information such as user names, passwords and other data used to identify computer users to Internet merchants, the paper said.

Lucent Technologies Metropolis EON Qualified by EMC as E-Lab Tested
Qualification Will Enable Service Providers to Offer Storage Networking Over Wavelength Services to Their Enterprise Customers
MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 7, 2002-- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - News) today announced that EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC - News) has qualified the Lucent Metropolis® Enhanced Optical Networking (EON) platform as E-Lab Tested(TM) meaning that Lucent's service provider customers will be able to meet the increased demand for storage networking, while using metro optical technology to offer managed wavelength services. ing enterprises and service providers to connect islands of mission-critical information and offices within that region. Such storage networking services also allow data recovery in the wake of a disaster and dramatically accelerate the flow of information from data centers to the end user.

Metropolis® EON was qualified with EMC's Symmetrix® and CLARiiON® Enterprise Storage systems and EMC's SRDF(TM) (Symmetrix Remote Data Facility) and MirrorView(TM) remote mirroring software.

"EMC conducts the industry's most comprehensive testing in its E-Lab, assuring customers the highest level of interoperability assurance," said Chuck Hollis, EMC's vice president of markets and products. "EMC's E-Lab Tested qualification of the Metropolis EON will help enterprises extend their information management architecture across multiple locations and help ensure the protection of their critical business information."

Metropolis® EON assists in meeting the demand for extended storage networking services by cost-effectively boosting network speed, flexibility and reach. Meanwhile, EMC's SRDF and MirrorView(tm) software enable businesses to replicate their data center to one or more remote sites, making business data available within minutes for fast recovery from unforeseen disasters and planned outages. With over 20 different patents, multiple generations of enhancements and over 12,000 licenses sold, SRDF is the industry standard in remote replication.

"This is an important first step toward bringing wavelength services to the data center," said Tim Sullivan, president, optical networking, Lucent Technologies. "This qualification demonstrates that our metro optical product - Metropolis EON - can help service providers cost-effectively meet the needs of their enterprise users."

The EMC-Lucent information management architecture supports large-scale application data center deployments. It provides enterprises with the ability to extend their storage infrastructure and to provide quicker data access and movement throughout the entire IT infrastructure. It also fulfills the service providers' need for a single infrastructure that enables them to develop, deploy and provision new services such as disaster recovery, business continuity, multi-site collaboration, and IT outsourcing.

The Metropolis® EON supports Plug-and-Play wavelength growth, which allows service providers to add wavelengths - as low as one at a time - without impacting existing traffic. Also, the offering makes it possible for any site to connected to any other site, offering complete service flexibility.

This combined EMC-Lucent offering provides an information management architecture that lowers operational cost by reducing the complexity of managing mixed storage environments through automated, policy based tools that improve quality and reduce requirements for specialized knowledge. In addition, both Lucent and EMC have tested and qualified this architecture to ensure virtually seamless inter-working and service continuity with a wide range of per wavelength protection options for increased Service Level Agreement (SLA) differentiation.

EMC's E-Lab Tested qualification process is a series of exhaustive functionality and reliability tests to ensure the interoperability of all components that make up a multi-vendor information storage network. In EMC's E-Labs, engineers replicate customer environments-using 2,600 terabytes of storage across nearly five acres of floor space. E-Lab Tested means that the Lucent Metropolis® Enhanced Optical Networking (EON) platform is fully interoperable with EMC information storage systems, enabling customers to deploy heterogeneous storage networks, quickly, reliably and cost-effectively.
