Good point Buddy! Federal Gas tax is being spent on other items - not highway construction - even though some metro areas are in dire need of new construction.

Not enough highways for you, eh? You should know that taxes that make up the "highway trust fund", are collected by the IRS, and deposited into the General Fund of the Treasury (kind of sounds like FICA doesn't it?). While I don't know for sure, this is probably the way the "Trust fund" worked from its beginning in the 50's...it certainly was the way the fund worked in 1998 according to the Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration - "Highway Trust Fund Primer -November 1998"
