Numbers are highly suspect as they are not precisely defined and they don't seem to match anything from other sources.

Did you test your hypothesis with other equipment companies or only with AMAT?

If you want to bash AMAT, read tomorrow's Barrons. It will have 10 Tech SELLs topped by INTC, SUNW and AMAT. Its 10 top buys will include MSFT and CSCO.

Alastair,

The numbers must be qualified as I have seen industry numbers in the past which have included items I would never have guessed to be a part of capex.

Additionally, using the chart Gottfried provided, conversely to the point you are trying to make, would you make the assumption that AMAT was stealing hoardes of market share from Q100 until Q400 while other industry leader revs are flat? And if not, why not?

One final point to make, comparing AMAT to Canon, Nikon and Hitachi, for all intents and purposes, is entirely meaningless, as though they may sever the same industry, they do so in different segments.

Even those cos which compete head to head do not always make for good comparisons. KLAC's outlook from its most recent CC appears that it is holding up better than most others in the industry. Could I extrapolate from this to guess that KLAC is stealing market share from AMAT? I could, but I would probably be wrong.
