nice trip report. anybody ever tell you you're a bit of a pessimist?

-ggg-

europe will be interesting. asia fell, we are falling, it seems unlikely that the third pillar of the modern global economy will emerge unscathed. imo, however, they will handle it considerably better than "we" will handle what is coming because your father-in-law is not alone in seeing five currencies in his lifetime.

it'll just be same-old same-old...

WTF is brasil going to do when nobody can afford to fund the IMF anymore?

I have founded a event company in Augsburg/Bavaria. To my very surprise I achieve to "employ" a group of about 20 volunteers (which I do not pay). They do it as a "Praktikum", kind of apprenticeship, as most students pass such to great better jobs later, it's for the CV. What surprises me, is that no one complains for not being paid. They seem to have fun here. The company does not earn money either yet, not enough finished projects. So it's all equal at least. And I say, hey, when we earn money it will be shared but not earlier. Is that the new entrepreneurial approach? I sometimes wonder who earns money at all if it's not for an error...

Joel,
Just got back to Whitehorse, Yukon from a week and a half in Dawson City, Yukon.

re:<<people talk about what germany has become.. a country of 4 and 6 week vacations, 34 hour work week, a minimum two car family in a country with massive public transportation, a country of nothing but fun times greatly exceeding what the hours worked can afford and what the state can pay. "back to basics" is expected by everyone and a grey cloud theme beneath the surface of everything. even the unions seem to, in part, be "getting it.">>

I would say close to half of the tourist in Dawson were German, some of the little shops even have german speaking sales people. Actually, it seems at least a third of the tourist in upper BC and the Yukon are German. I was beginning to wonder if there were any germans left in germany -g-
