American has 101,000 employees. If the headline read, "American retains 94,000 employees", and then the article mentioned that of the other 7,000, 2,000 were gonna retire anyways, another 3,000 will have jobs within four to six months (before their generous severance expires), it wouldn't seem so bad.

And those numbers are pretty close to what usually happens in those situations, even when the economy is relatively weak as it is now.

I agree, though, that O'Neil should STFU. But if we don't listen to him and he speaks, does he really say anything?

you know i said this a month ago and i will say it again...

when i start to hear about new hiring (besides sky marshalls <g>) then i will take a fundamentally bullish stance.

when you read about the hundreds of 1000's of HIGH wage layoffs, at some point there must be a cumulative effect.

i would like to see the corresponding numbers of new job creation....

of course there was a post 9/11 industry downturn....but the fact is that airlines have been struggling since well before then....at a time when passenger counts were at all time highs....

and still they couldn't make money.

i think it was the ceo of continental who recently said they are only as good as their dumbest competitor....meaning the airlines are unable to collude to make price increases *stick*....even with the latest government cash infusion....(tax payer money down a rat hole)....at some point overcapacity must be addressed.

and that will mean layoffs.

unless and until job creation begins to reach parity with job losses, people will do what is in their best financial interest.
