Yes, our interpretations and opinions of any religion, particularly when practiced in a very different culture, are colored by the values we have absorbed from our own culture. An example would be our abhorrence of the sacrifice of animals.

Also, it is difficult to separate the effect of a religion on behaviors from the effect of the general culture in which it is practiced. If somehow Christianity were historically the state religion of Iraq, we would expect that its teachings would have long been corrupted and twisted by the Hussein regime.

Yet, notwithstanding, I will stick to my view that there are mega-effects that a religion has on its believers, and that Islam does not come off as a religion of peace and good will.
