because a belief in intelligent and purposeful design of the universe is tantamount to acknowledging the existence of a Creator a/k/a God.

I get the point about the absolute vs. relative morality thing although I think you're making too much of it. If we can agree about what's moral and what isn't, what difference does it make? Yes, over time I might change my mind about the list and you won't. But we're not talking about tomorrow. Maybe a couple of generations from now. I don't see why that obviates having an alliance now.

I think the "origins of the universe" question is central here, because a belief in intelligent and purposeful design of the universe is tantamount to acknowledging the existence of a Creator a/k/a God.

So it's central, as far as you're concerned. Your asserting that doesn't tell me why. When a fireman shows up at your burning door, does it matter to either of you who believes in what. You both agree that lives need to be saved for sure, and property, too, if possible. Do you really know the religious beliefs of everyone you have ever respected or not respected? If you're forming a board for your homeowner's association, do you check religious credentials? I'm not hearing an answer for why it matters?

Aside from being annoyingly tolerant, what threat do humanists pose (aside from the threat of being an observable alternative belief style)?
