Agreed CB. Still the low around my area stores cater much more to contractors than hd. Spec checkouts & order desks. low also has spec sale flyers and coffee areas,,,,,,,, doesn't do much good that I can see. for pricing hd still is the winner. now for cabinetry I found Kraftmaid at prices you would kill for,, nice seeing you again,, its been a very long time.

Bob,

<<<If the housing market dried up today I don't think it would kill either company>>>

I think there are a lot more semi professionals shopping at both places than any of their directors would like to admit. A soft housing market would certainly affect what I'm doing and how soon I'd be ready to build another house. It would also put a serious dent in the fixer upper market, which I suspect accounts for the bulk of their trade. Not to mention repairs required by lenders as a condition to closing older home sales. Then there are the smaller spec builders leveraged to their eyebrows. What happens to the market when enough of them have to start closing sales at lower prices to raise cash? Those home improvement projects start looking less cost effective to anyone buried in a zero down home at a price the market will no longer support.

Everything's connected. Maybe the last $100K spent on materials for a spec home built by XYZ Construction Co. wasn't spent at Home Depot or Lowe's, but if XYZ Construction Co. has too many unsold homes on the market, it'll eventually impact the general demand for building materials. And if XYZ Construction Co. has to lay off some workers, chances are those workers won't be using their last pay check to remodel the kitchen.
