Silver factoid: How much is silver in non-inflated dollars relative to 1966?

I chose 1966 because I also wanted to look at the Dow relative to the peak of the post-war boom. I have produced statistics to the end of 2001.

Ok, drum roll please: The average price of silver in 1966 was about 1.32 an ounce, and the Dow was around 1000. Cumulative inflation 1966-2001 is about 5.36, which means the box of cheesies you bought in 1966 now costs about 5 times as much.

So, at the end of 2001, silver in non-inflated dollars was 81 cents an once, and the Dow was 1870 (!!!!) The amazing statistic for me is the Dow. 35 years and not even a double. It proves that the success of buy and hold is relative to when you buy.
