In November of 2000, LSI acquired the intellectual property (IP) assets and related engineering talent of ParaVoice Technologies, Inc for $34 million. According to LSI's 10K, no significant revenue is seen from this investment until 2007 but it does represent an emerging technology investment by our company.

Here is an article that provides more detail regarding this purchase. Also, check out LSI's web site because the industry changes so fast that VoIP deployment may slip a year or two as the telco industry may delay their capital investments because of the recent cycle downturn.

MILPITAS, Calif. -- LSI Logic Corp. here today announced the acquisition of voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) IC and software design specialist ParaVoice Inc., a subsidiary of ParaGea Communications Inc., for $38.4 million.

Under the terms of the deal, LSI Logic will acquire the intellectual property (IP) assets and related engineering talent from ParaVoice, based in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

ParaVoice itself specializes in voice, fax and data compression technology. This will be used to develop chip-level products for VoIP-enabled Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) applications, said Giuseppe Staffaroni, vice president of the Broadband Communications Division at LSI Logic.

"Our technology roadmap calls for LSI Logic to provide VoIP and VoDSL (voice-over-DSL) capabilities to our customers competing in the broadband space," Staffaroni said. "We intend to combine this technology with our ZSP digital signal processor to offer complete single-chip solutions."

The acquisition includes 17 software and systems engineers, which will be located at a new LSI Logic design center, in Bethesda. The acquisition will not be financially material to LSI Logic's earnings during the upcoming quarters. The acquisition does not require regulatory approval.
