I had gotten the impression from the news that there were bargains out there so I checked the other day for fares from Washington to Tucson this fall. I was surprised that the cost was 50% more than I had ever paid for that trip, more than I had ever paid to fly to Hawaii, even.

i've read somewhere that the general rule of thumb is if the fare is $350 or lower, better to pay for the ticket instead of using milage.

however if you're like me and have lots of miles, and shall we say have certain concerns about the future viability of the carrier...you might want to use the miles.

I have almost 100k FF miles with AA for that reason. I've been getting such cheap flights it seemed silly to use the miles for domestic travel. But the NYT articles about the condition of the airlines are a little scary....

I hadn't heard that 350. was the sensible cutoff, but had arrived at about that amount intuitively. I can get us from NY to San Francisco for 334. each non stop. Not on AA, so I wouldn't get FF miles. Does anybody think it's worth it to have to change planes for the FF miles? I think maybe it is. It'll cost the same ($10. more) on AA, but you have to change planes in St. Louis. Opinions? I don't hate changing planes. Though at Christmas weather can cause delays and you could miss your connection, I guess.

I was on the phone with a friend in NYC who just got back from LA, and she said it cost her almost $400. for airport taxis (four taxi trips, to the airport, to her destination from the airport, and vice versa) and less than that for her ticket to LA.

It'll cost us almost $200. just for the taxi part of our trip, too.

Edit: I just checked Hotwire.com, and I could do it for 265. each but I can't know either the airline or flight time until I've bought the tickets. And no changes or credits.

Just bought the Christmas tickets. I decided to remain calm and didn't use the FF miles. I am allergic to losing my FF miles and will sue you if AA goes bankrupt and that happens.

$683. grand total for two, Newark to SF, good connections (enough time but not too much), and painless departure times.

They actually give you a drop down menu with many choices of meals, and so for the novelty of it I chose vegetarian. N says he's going to take some rolled up roast beef or maybe some liver and a hefty length of that disgusting sausage made out of blood and drop it on the plate next to the veges.
