Bury (sh)it and a million flies will starve. Can you be that cruel? Cats do however, and that is so no animal will follow them back to their tree fort. If you are concerned about bears, and if it is the spring, you should be, then it may be a good idea. Additionally, especially if it is a wet day (scents trails are magnified then), tuck your pants into your boots so the scent of your body does not pump out onto the ground. When you eat, toss the decomposables in a random way all around you. The if bears find it they will wander in a circle, never connecting the fragments with a trail. If you double back on your trail occasionally it will throw bears off your trail, as they do stalk humans and other movies stars. In order not to scare animals if you are sneaking up on them, talk in low tones but do not whisper. Man is the only animal that whispers and it is a strange sound to animals. A transistor radio will scare a bear or moose but the human voice often will not unless the tone is commanding, clear and confident. Scaring a bear often works, as in producing a loud sudden sound, as in chopping a tree, but it is not 100% guaranteed. Neither is climbing a tree, but it is preferred to say, fighting the animal with a penknife. Pepper spray will not always work either as bears will eat honey bee hives blithely enduring bee stings. Standing stock still has been observed to work, as bears are often not more curious when they approach. What else has been seen to work is backing away slowly, and constantly from the bears territitory. If it is a female, it will try to get between you and wherever its cubs are, which could be up to 1/4 mile away.

Did you know birds see the flourescence of urine trails of animals and track them in that way? A bird's vision would be a riot of fluourescing reflections as if it were in a black light environment. There is UV light everywhere during the day, but birds pick up the reaction of substances to this from the glare of daylight. Other animals such as cats, wolves and bears actually see in infrared, allowing them to hunt at night. Some dinosaurs differentiated things well only if they moved. Their vision would be dynamically dominated. A fly is like this with its compound eye, which emphasizes motion. Some people imagine that a fly sees multiple images but we do no see two of things because we have two eyes, the fly probably sees one thing, but sees it move before we do.
