I think people may be lumping several different factors together and just calling it 'autism'.

The links I posted seem to identify a pretty strong genetic component in those Valley cases... though I'm sure that other damage or trauma to a mind's development could also cause similar effects.

I think that is a legitimate suspicion, but would suspect parental drug abuse before conception or during pregnancy also.

The symptoms of autism can be produced by disease, but this is not the usual case. There is usually a genetic cause behind the cases described. It is likely that aspects of the syndrome which are advantageous in our current environment outweigh the disadvantages and so the trait multiplies. ( there are some who keep saying that human evolution has stopped).
