Cop pursuing car thief finds own car gone
Copyright 2002 Houston Chronicle

A Houston police officer chasing a suspected car thief through a Houston neighborhood on foot Tuesday gave up and returned to his patrol car -- to find it had been stolen.

The officer spotted a stolen car driving in northwest Houston and pursued it. The driver soon bailed out in the 900 block of Marcolin and took off on foot, with the officer in hot pursuit.

When the officer lost sight of his fleet quarry, he returned to find his marked patrol car gone.

It was recovered about seven hours later in the 6700 block of Stuebner-Airline. It's believed the man the officer was chasing had taken it.

"I don't know why a policeman would leave a car running in this neighborhood," said resident Howard Drucker. "Just because they are painted with police signs don't mean they got some magical protection."

Drucker should know. His pickup was stolen last year.

Finally, there is airport security that really works fine. I could come out of retirement to do a few scans myself.
To inspect airport travelers -- just move the New Security Wand "your mouse" -- across the entire body of the subject.
