I think that the take away point that I was trying to make was that, after serious evaluation, if they came out in favor of it, that they are something other than well-meaning. It is possible to take the subject seriously, but I believe that anybody who has some intelligence will see the flaws in the proposal pretty quickly. I believe that the main supporters of this proposal have a vested interest in encouraging the African-American population to view themselves as victims as well as keeping the flames between race relations fanned.

As a NYer with personal and professional ties to that university, I found your post hilarious.

...[S]erious, well meaning people...

There's nothing more terrifying than "well-meaning" academics. Especially if they're industrious.

...studying this matter...

Studying it, within the insulation of the ivory tower. And what's their average age? 27, 28?

...and treating this subject with respect.

Those who don't respect the premise of reparations - let alone those who vehemently disagree - have little choice but to nod along. The left wing gestapo up there - about 50 blocks north of where I sit at this moment - is as unforgiving and potentially punishing of those deviating from the party line as right-wingers are in spheres outside of academia.
