It is bizarre. Where I live forestry is the major industry. No one here questions the value of the technique in preventing the loss of forests due to fire.

Where you live the forests are often tree farms. Where I live, they're mostly natural forests with some that are old growth. The ecological systems in an natural forest are far more complex and delicate than in a tree farm. If one of your forests is logged, it usually causes only minor damage. When established, natural forests are logged, the ecosystem can be damaged indefinitely, sometimes irreparably.

The earth's ecosystems are surprisingly resilient; however, man has a way of pulverizing that resilience. People like Mr. Bush and the loggers seem to have little understanding of the importance of trees to the world's ecosystem. Further, they represent those people who feel the need to 'conquer' the planet, damaging ecosystems in the process. Its for that reason almost everything Mr. Bush does in this arena is suspect and usually invokes rage in environmentalists.

From time to time, I wonder if the growing numbers of people who are concerned about the environment is by chance, or its a genetic predisposition that's growing in an effort to prevent the extinction of the race.
