All the same, I think guys who have actually fought in a war should hold sway over guys who haven't.

This is not our tradition. The military is subject to civilian authority. I don't think having fought in a war or served in the military makes anyone reasoning person's opinion about a military action any less valid.

The civilian authority is supreme. That includes the guys who got a college deferment or joined the Air National Guard.
