Ben, "only one way (with present technology) to shrink asynchronous handset's search window to facilitate successful handoff and minimize power drain - greater cell station density"

The obvious way is to synchronize the BTSs. IMHO, to synchronize has got to be cheaper than adding BTSs. Hasn't CDMA been doing this with "old" technology of IS-95A? Isn't the real problem that CDMA-style synchronization would take the W-CDMA camp back to U.S. military GPS?

Or worse, might W-CDMA handover performance remain un-improved even with synchonization? Is there a soft under-belly here the W-CDMA camp doesn't wish to expose?

Ron

You are correct--I was comparing the number of towers needed at 900 Mhz with those that will be needed at 2.1 GHz, and the conservative number is three times.
