Well, in French its called « essence » for essence minérale.

What is petrol?

Petro refers to rocks, oleum to oil, same origin as the French word above.

Another odd thing in France is they call license plates « plaques minéralogiques », I found out finally that le département des mines originally handled them, but it seemed a strange thing to call them at first.
