Bob,
On a skewer of "what if," my smorgasbord of questions.
.
Note: Below your post, and in CAPITAL text, my stuff.

...
I've got a pretty good idea of what I think SI is worth
but won't say because *if* it ever goes up on the block,
I intend to be a bidder...

SOUNDS LIKE A WIN/WIN FOR ME
AS I HOPE SI CONTINUES "AS IS"
AND GETS BETTER IN THE YEARS AHEAD,
OR IF THATS NOT IN THE CARDS,
CONTINUES WITH YOU AS NEW OWNER
AND HOPEFULLY IF POSSIBLE
TO BRING BACK THE "OLD TEAM"
THAT CREATED Silicon Investor MANY YEARS AGO,
AND IF THE ORIGINAL FOLKS WHO CREATED Si
ARE NOT AVAILABLE AS EMPLOYEES,
THEN MOST LIKELY AS PAYED ADVISORS
TO SEE THEIR CREATED GO BACK TO FULL GLORY.
ALSO,
ITS A GLASS 1/2 FULL & EMPTY
BUT THE WORTH OF Si CAN INCREASE
IF
THE CURRENT MEMBERS ARE KNOWNED TO LIKE
WHERE THE TRANSFER WILL BE, AS THEY WILL BOTH
REMAIN AS PAYING MEMBERS, AND MEMBERS LOST
WOULD RE-JOIN Si IF THEY LIKED THE NEW OWNERS.
SO YES, IF YOU WERE KNOWNED AS THE BUYER OF Si
THEN CURRENT OWNERS OF Si HAVE THE ABILITY TO
INCREASE WHAT IT'S WORTH WOULD BE "TO YOU"
VERSUS AN FOOLS OR RAGING BULL OR YAHOO.
.
[Silicon Investor] worth more to me because of the value
I put on the community and history.
.
IF THE SEARCH ENGINE HERE ON Si WAS OF
AN ADVANCED TYPE THAT COULD USE STRINGS
FOR NAMES AND DATES THAT WOULD ALLOW
VERY SPECIFIC SEARCHING, AND MAYBE EVEN
HAVE THE ABILITY TO START A NEW SEARCH
INTO THE RESULTS OF A SEARCH JUST DONE,
THEN ACCESS TO Si's history OF ALL POSTS
WOULD BE A VALUABLE TOOL FOR THOSE FEW
FOLKS HERE THAT ARE KNOWNED AS THE BEST
POSTERS THAT ARE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE
FAR ABOVE THE REST.
...
The way SI is written, though, it would take about 4 T1's
and a decent sized server farm full of heavy-hitter machines.
.
I ALWAYS WONDERED THESE PAST YEARS ON Si
WHEN PROBLEMS WITH GROWTH ARRIVED
THAT Si TRIED TO KEEP Si RUNNING NON-STOP
WHILE MAKING CHANGES. TO ME IT WAS LIKE
A TRUCK THAT CARRIED A LIGHT LOAD IN THE START
THAT THE SPRINGS & TIRES WERE FULLY RATED FOR,
BUT AS THE LOAD INCREASED THE LIMITS WERE EXCEEDED
AND RATHER THAN STOP THE TRUCK AND PUT UP ONTO
A LIFT AND MAKE COMPLETE CHANGES, Si SEEMED TO
KEEP THE TRUCK RUNNING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AS
THEY TRIED TO CHANGE TIRES AND SUSPENSION
WHILE THE TRUCK WAS IN MOTION OR THOSE FEW TIMES
THAT IT RAN INTO THE GUTTER.
SO I WONDER, IF YOU GOT Si FROM A 4SALE OF IT
AND WAS ABLE TO TAKE DELIVERY AS A TRUCK
THAT HAS BEEN STOPPED AND PLACED ON FLATBED
AND DELIVERED TO YOU, WOULD YOU TAKE THE TIME
TO TRANSFER THE POSTS ONE BY ONE INTO ANOTHER
TYPE DATABASE OR WHATEVER IS USED TO STORE
THESE POSTS? SEEMS THAT YOU AND MOST RECONIZE THAT
THE POSTS ALREADY DONE IS REALLY Si, AND THE ABILITY
TO POST AND COMMUNICATE IS JUST A LAYER OR INTERFACE
THAT SITS BETWEEN THE POSTER AND THE STORAGE
OF THE POST SO THAT READING AND SEARCHING CAN BE DONE.
...
And to prove that I don't know it all, look at iVillage.
.
I NEVER BEEN THERE.
WHY IS IT A SUCCESSFUL PLACE?
DOES IT USE POP-UPS ADS?
IS IT FREE OR PAY TO JOIN?
IS IT A FRIENDY PLACE, OR IF TROUBLE MAKERS
ARE THERE, HOW DO THEY POLICE IT? A JAIL THERE?

That was indeed a good assessment of the operational costs.

My point was, its not really a make or break operation affecting the bottom line of INSP to such a large extent. If used smartly, it is still be more of an asset than a liability.

As such, I think all this conversation about SI being shut down may be premature, imagination of minds that haven't really grasped the cost benefits equation.

You seem to have reached the same conclusion - right ?
