Taiwan's Mobile Phone Production Value Estimated at US$1.6 BLN

TAIPEI, Aug 26 Asia Pulse - The production value of Taiwan's mobile phone industry is expected to exceed US$1.6 billion, an 88 per cent growth over the US$857 million reported in 2001, according to a report released Friday by the China External Trade Development Council (CETRA).
The report indicates that last year, the production value of mobile phones accounted for 32 per cent of the country's entire communication industry.

At the four-day Taipei International Telecommunications and Networking Show that kicked off Friday at the Taipei World Trade Center, new domestically produced models are expected to attract more attention, especially as many international brands, including Nokia, Siemens, Philips and Panasonic, are not represented at this year's show.

Industry analysts predict that Taiwan-made GSM (global systems for mobile telecommunications) phone sales might reach 88 million units in 2002 and might jump to 150 million units in 2003.

While the domestic mobile phone industry is growing rapidly, Taipei as an exhibition venue for advanced wireless communications products is facing increasing competition from other Asian cities. This year, the Taipei Telecom show only managed to attract 140 exhibitors from home and abroad, compared with the total of 178 in the preceding year.

Although the most advanced models from Motorola, Sony-Ericsson and Samsung are present at the exhibition, many European manufacturers are shifting their targets by attending instead the CeBit Shanghai exhibition in early September.

As the exhibition is open to the public as well as to trade professionals, networking services are emphasized this year.
