This is becoming a (bad) habit - sorry Karen - but I should add that American participation in WW2 didn't get going until 1943.

Most of you Fortress America guys talk glibly about sacrifice, but I doubt you have any idea what French, British and allied losses really meant in the first war - German losses too. Try for a moment translating 1 million casualties for each of thse countries into American population terms. Think of the loss of talent in all fields, the novels never written, films never made, discoveries never made and so on. And a generation of children brought up without fathers. The flower of French manhood lost, and the same in other countries. And then consider the Russian losses in the Second War.

So the world looks at America today and wonders. Have you the remotest idea my friends?

As a matter of fact, I have been to Canada, the United States, and The Bahamas. That's enough ground for anybody to cover, and I have no interest whatsoever to visit France. Everybody in my family who has been there say they had unpleasant experiences, and I know my family isn't the ugly American kind. I have two sisters who have been all over the world, including China, and nothing they tell me is enough to make me want to go.

I don't feel like an isolationist at all, Enigma. I am merely frustrated with the lack of mankind's ability to get along. It is truly abominable. I am doing all I can to change that in my little sphere of influence, and if half the people in the world--naw, a quarter of the people--would do that, the world would be a paradise for all.

I have no patience for evildoers, however. There is no space in the genepool for them at all. They change, or they go. If it takes hit and run to do that, so be it.
