As for Keller's being passed over, I think we know that from the New Yorker piece. Do you know it from any other source?

As for the Keller piece, I read it. Found it interesting for the same reasons you did, though I haven't read Kaus recently, at least not on the Times. He's apparently enlisted in the cause.

Keller himself, on the evidence of his writing, would not have been a good choice. He can't seem to make his mind up. Either that's a personal characteristic or this is a first draft. In either case, not good material for an editor.

It wasn't clear whether Keller had Todd Purdum in his sights or Raines. I assumed Purdum. But you could easily be right.
