"And destroying that SYMBOL is NOT the same as attacking the country, its people, or its gov't. Not hardly. What you have really done is destroy a piece of dyed cloth.
No buildings have fallen. No one is dead."

How about having public burnings of the flag and the constitution. Just paper and cloth.

"...is a political expression about it and what it stands for. And that is political."</?>

Treason is a political expression about the govt and what it stands for. It is advocating an overthrow of the govt to which the offender owes allegiance. To attempt to dismantle the foundations of government seems treasonous to me. The flag is a symbol of allegiance. What else would be? A violent overthrow would be but this doesn't come from a vacuum it comes from political intent and is simply a violent political expression. You sure you don't want that protected too?

Whether you agree with the representatives or not is a separate matter. Violent acts against persons is another issue, not necessarily treason.

How do you define treason?
