You, in fact, seem to be making precisely that misidentification. Destroying a flag DOES NOT destroy the nation or ideas behind it. They are still there, just as serviceable as before. As long as the PEOPLE of this country believe in those IDEAS and are willing to defend them, they are safe. And no bonfire will change that.
