Please explain to me the difference between "national interest" and "homeland security".

To me they seem the same, couched in different marketing-speak words.


I dont think that the terms I used were very clear.

However, I think that there is a clear distinction between wars in which we have the choice to fight (for example, Panama and Gulf War I) and those which are thrust upon us. Al Qaeda declared war on us long ago....they brought the attacks to within our national borders on 9/11. From that point forward, an attack on their bases in Afghanistan was a foregone conclusion. The only question was how?

If every scenario involving Afghanistan involved our troops staying for an extended period, we would still have had to make the committment. The choice was that or simply allow Al Qaeda to continue to attack us with impunity.

I dont really consider that a choice....
