Three new PC magazine Editor's choice

August 26, 2002
Dell Dimension 8200

pcmag.com

The Dimension 8200 ($3,058 direct) is a fast and robust system that provides impressive peripherals and a terrific three-year on-site warranty for parts and labor. While it's not the absolute best performer here, it delivers the right combination of speed, performance, and price, and merits the Editors' Choice.

Midrange: Dell Precision Workstation 340
High-end: Dell Precision Workstation 530

pcmag.com

In both categories, Dell outshone its competition. The Dell Precision Workstation 340 was the most complete midrange system, with great performance, thanks to its top-of-the-line components, such as a fast 2.53-GHz P4 processor, 118GB hard drive, and the Dell Quadro4 700 XGL graphics card. Its performance was impressive, though the Polywell Poly 850E-2530, which receives an honorable mention, bested the Precision 340 on most benchmark tests. The 850E is an excellent workstation with great components and unsurpassable benchmark test results—all at an exceptionally low price. Unfortunately, its inclusion of the nVidia GeForce4 Ti4600 graphics card and weak support and services held it back.

In the high-end category, the Dell Precision Workstation 530 squeaks ahead of the rest of the pack with its solid performance results and impressive support options. The HP x4000 is also a very good machine but costs more than the Precision 530.
