Back in the days when we were still friendly, Poet and I had a good discussion on what liberalism is and is not. The meaning has changed not perhaps 180 degrees, but very considerably in the past 40 years or so. For example, I considered JFK's "ask not what your country can do for you..." speech to be classical liberalism. But most who call themselves liberals today would scorn such attitudes; for them, the issue is more "demand that your country do for you, forget about your obligation to do for it." Hubert Humphrey, Adlai Stevenson, and their ilk would be shocked by what contemprary liberals demand under the label they were proud to carry.

I am certainly not a neo-liberal. But I do consider myself still to be a classic liberal.
