Smog is a seperate issue then global warming.

Actually, Tim, they are directly linked.......many of the same chemicals found in smog are contributing to the global warming effect.

I agree the ozone problem is getting worse. Most other air pollutants are down in the US but ozone is a problem in urban and suburban areas.

''The Edison Electric Institute, a utility lobbying group, said U.S. air quality has improved over the last three decades despite increases in power output and U.S. economic growth.

Conditions were improving but have worsened in the past two years. It may be due to a cumulative effect caused by the substantive buildup of new and used cars during the 90's.

We can't control the weather, which does contribute to ozone,'' said Dan Riedinger, a spokesman for the industry group. ''But we can control our emissions, and they are coming down.''

Thats true. Cars emit a fraction of the nitrogen oxides that they used to (but there are more cars now) and power plant production is down as well (but I don't think it has declined nearly as much).

And there is still another problem........the substantive increase in cars during the 90's has not seen a commensurate increase in roadway miles. As a result, driving times have worsened.......the longer cars sit in traffic, the more junk they throw into the air.
