Because if they don't have control, then treating them that way is living a lie. Which some people would not define as a win.

Also, if they really aren't in control, how can you argue that the belief that they are in control is a control on their actions? If a vacuum cleaner believed it was in control of when its bag got changed, would that affect when its bag got changed? Being not in control means being not in control. Your theory only works out if one is a bit in control.
