because even if we are not in control, all the things that happen around us are part of the vast machinery that govern all the little neural states that make us who we are. The belief in control is like a real thing to people who believe it is real. It is exactly like religion. All religions work for people who believe they work. Whether it is "real" or not doesn't matter- it changes the life of the person who believes it. Then the question becomes, do you need or want your life changed in that manner? of course whether you have any choice in how you answer that question is another question.
