Any rise in oil prices will be very painful for George W. Bush, in a very personal, political sort of way (it will drive the economy back into recession, for which he personally will be blamed). May I suggest that looking out for his personal political future trumps the wishes of his oil-producing buddies?

Mq, I'm not sure I follow.

Are you saying that all the tension in the ME is consciously schemed so that the resulting higher oil prices will lead to development of energy alternatives?

I can't believe any Bush who considers himself a dyed-in-the-saddle Texan would go for such a scheme.
