Ok, Karen you got me. When I read the first article, Atheist Seeks End to Hill Chaplaincies I was leaning so hard to one opinion that this article Judge Allows Class Action Suit by Navy Chaplains caused me whiplash. I thought that the "under God" guy was out to cause more problems and make headlines with a somewhat benign example of government waste, Chaplains as government civil servants. Maybe there is a constitutional issue as well. But why cause all this trouble?

As a quasi-practicing Catholic (no I’ve was never molested nor do I know anyone who was ever molested after 12 years of Catholic schooling by priests and nuns) and a tax payer, I have to wonder what we have gotten our selves into. I’m sure most religions would be there for free but it looks like the Navy Chaplains are going to sue. This will cost taxpayers more money. Get rid of government supported religious personnel. A religion worth it’s salt will fill the gap and the congregation will support them.

That is very interesting, but probably a loser. The discrimination is almost certainly rational. A "liturgical" Protestant can fulfill the sermonizing and counseling needs of a "non- liturgical" Protestant, but the reverse is not true. As for the over- representation of Catholics, the very fact that they have heavier sacramental duties than most denominations means that there is more labor that can only be performed by a priest. They are supposed to offer absolution and perform extreme unction, for example, not merely say Mass......
