I don't think about the past that way
things happen and other things happen

Justification is a moral overlay
I don't see a reason why the past has to be justified, especially not the distant past. And it is usually impossible to know whether or not the means were necessary for the ends- unless you accept that since they happened that way, they were necessary.

It is probably important to be able to justify future actions to ourselves, in order to stay on track with whatever our morality happens to be. But I don't see the point with the past. Unless you look at the very recent past, with an eye to improving future conduct.
