one can tell a pioneer by the arrows in his back

well thomas beckett set up a government in exile in france. henry and thomas made their peace in france, but upon the return to england it did not go so well :-) . henry II is a good example, because he is the first example of the state running the state and not the religion(s) of the state running it. i have to use european history, because that is where the reformation of the "christian" religions came about. surely problems between the state and religion continued long, long, long after henry II. getting the religion out of politics in europe was incremental and took a long time. i believe jefferson (or was it madison) was the main driver in the usa to make sure the separation of religion and state was kept. i wonder when a henry II will step up in islam, and i wonder how many hundred years must pass before separation of church and state in islam happens. i wonder how many muslim thinkers may see any parallels between islamic states and the plight of the american indian.
