Police Detonate Bag, Arrest Three in Florida CNSNews.com Friday September 13, 2002 CNSNews.com -- A terror alert has closed a 20-mile stretch of I-75 (Alligator Alley) at the edge of the Florida Everglades this morning. Live aerial television footage shows two cars (a beige Nissan and a black Honda) stopped on the highway; a bomb squad team detonated what appeared to be a bag taken from one of the cars. Police are now looking into a suitcase with a remote device, and a trigger mechanism has been found in the area. Bomb sniffing dogs had also picked up some scent of explosive material. One of the cars is registered to someone in Hanover Park, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. Fox News reported a customer at a Shoney's in Calhoun, Georgia Wednesday night overhead three Middle Eastern men talking about a major attack in Florida that would happen on Sept. 13. The customer reported this to a waitress, who then reported it to the authorities. She quoted them as saying that people were mourning on 9/11 and they'll be mourning again today because something "big" was going to happen. FoxNews is reporting that she heard the men speaking of the amount of explosives they had, which were "not enough to bring it down," but the men hadn't specified what "it" might be. Police were able to locate the two cars in which the two men were traveling partly because of the description from the waitress, and partly because one of the cars blew through a toll booth at around 1 o'clock this morning, at which point Collier County Sheriff's Department deputies pulled over one of the cars. The second car pulled in behind police. Collier County sheriff's deputies are now questioning three suspects. The INS has said that the men are all legal U.S. residents.
