I'm not up on slavery in the classical world, but it's my impression that they had certain rights, such as exemption from mandatory military service -- and, of course, there were limited legal rights in citizens, so the gap was perhaps not as wide as we would imagine it to be under our contemporary notions of the difference between citizenry and slavery.

But again, I'm not up on classical slavery, so I could be misremembering.
