Eight new outposts set up in territories

By NINA GILBERT

Peace Now:

The Peace Now organization said Sunday that eight new outposts have been established in the territories by settlers in the past few days. The organization called on Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer to"keep his word" and to dismantle every illegal building.

Ben-Eliezer's office dismissed the importance of the report. "Ben-Eliezer is dealing with this issue on an ongoing basis and does not need reminders from Peace Now," Ben-Eliezer's spokesman said.

According to the findings of a report issued yesterday by the organization, the new structures include mobile homes, a restaurant, water tanks, shipping containers, and cement blocks.

The group also said that a number of settlements are continuing "illegal building," including paving roads and adding mobile homes.

Peace Now director Moria Shlomot said the building of more outposts is likely to increase security costs to the IDF.

The report also said a cafe is under construction at a location called Hakaron near the settlement of Eli that includes a train car and a lookout post. Near Hagai and Shvut Rachel, caravans have been situated, the report said.

The spokesman for the Council of Jewish Communities in Judea, Samaria, and the Gaza Strip said Peace Now's report is "not worthy" of a response. "This is obviously a group of people who are bored and have nothing better to do," said Yehoshua Mor-Yosef.

Peace Now is also continuing its campaign to try to encourage settlers to leave the territories. The group has appealed to "non-ideological settlers" to form a lobby to try to get the government to help them relocate.

KC,

The purely unscientific notion I get from reading various European writer and bloggers is that there is a considerable difference between the opinion of the average European 'joe six pack', and the Eurocrats who do most of the pronouncing on policy. Care to comment?

KC, seems like you can pick your day, and get a story either way on what the ME countries around Iraq want to do. One day, we are getting cooperation in our war planning, the next day, some "official" denies it. The conflicting stories all seem to get posted here.

I think we will not know what the administration is planning, for sure, until after the November elections.

A majority of Europeans think that US foreign policy is partially to blame for the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
