The people that I know (in 3d) from SI? They are not their posts. In 3d they are quite different. Their posts are a product of the person, but not the person. I think you treat the post with whatever respect you think it deserves, separate from the respect you might give the person, as a person.

The ideas of the person are not the person, and posts are ideas. And you do not (IMO) need to be as polite to an idea, as to a person. Thus were I to meet a neonazi I could still open a door for him or her, but I would show no respect for their ideas regarding the neonazi movement as posted on line. I would not cut in line in front of someone who claimed that liberals are idiots, just because I didn't like their ideas. But I would show that idea no respect on line, nor would I respect the post that had that idea in it. Of course one loses a small bit of respect for what one imagines the person behind the post to be, when the person posts something we do not like. The real trouble comes for people who do not realize that we are so much more than what is here. And though you may not respect little bits of ideas, the real person might be very worthy of respect as most people are- as humans. I just don't happen to think that human respect translates into being respectful about all ideas on the net, all personas created by people to be on the net, or all pieces of a persona on the net.

"It is more important that we treat them with the same respect we hope to be treated with when we post or speak."

that last line is interesting, in light of some of your posts.

Given the way you have treated me in the past, I assume from this that you do not want me to treat you with any respect, or give any credence to the chance that you might have any sense of morality or any intelligence.

Not that I think you have any of those things, but it's nice to see you confirm it.
