You still haven't supplied two things:

1) what the US should have done to stop the Indonesian invasion, and

2) what possible motive the US would have for wanting Indonesia to invade tiny East Timor and slaughter its people.

Your biased presentation of factoids is intended to portray the US as instigating the Indonesian invasion and the atrocities that followed. You want your readers to conclude the US is a wicked power who desires the deaths of poor innocents.

Remember the population ratios (200 million vs 0.7 million) that are also facts. Remember also that E Timor is part of the Indonesian archipelago surrounded by Indonesia territory on three sides. Indonesia hardly needed any great assistance in taking East Timor. Indeed a good deal of effort would have had to been expended in preventing Indonesia from marching across the border and occupying it.

Oh, I forgot to mention the full reason the left makes a fuss over Indonesia's treatment of East Timor. Part of the reason is to dirty the US image by claiming we wanted the Indonesian invasion and atrocities to happen. To America-bashers like yourself and Noam, America is responsible for every bad thing that happens. If America intervenes somewhere, we're responsible for everything that happens even after the intervention is ended. But if we don't intervene, we are still responsible for "giving the green light" to others.

Second, the left needed - and still needs - to divert attention from the much larger bloodbath which was occurring simultaneously in Indochina after America withdrew from the region. Wouldn't want Communist regimes to get a bad image, now would you.

Hi Thomas,

You can't possibly think, after all this time that facts matter to the RWEs, can you? <g> Arguing with these people is like punching a beach ball. They just bounce right back afterwards to the same uncomprehending hydrocephalic dream state. Reality doesn't enter into their consciousness. I don't know whether to admire you for persisting in pointless arguments that you can't possible win simply because there is no one with an iota of honesty on the other side of the debate..... or suggest a good site to expand your mind like: cooperativeresearch.org

Hours of fun sleuthing. Guaranteed. Plus, as a bonus, you get a chance to contribute! <smile>

Cheerio! Ray
