TSMC reserves land to build four fabs in China, says report

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- More details are surfacing about Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd.'s bold fab plans in China.

The silicon foundry giant has reportedly obtained enough land in China to build two 8-inch fabs and two other 300-mm plants over the next 10 years, according to the China Economic News Service (CENS) of Taiwan.

Last week, TSMC said it signed a letter of intent to build at least one wafer fab in the Songjiang district of Shanghai. The Hsinchu-based company has given few--if any--details about its fab plans (see Aug. 29 story ).

But according to CENS, TSMC in June inked a letter of intent with the government of the Songjiang district in Shanghai to finalize the fab project. The Songjiang government has reserved a 2,000-hectare site for TSMC's investment plan, which could support two 8-inch fabs and two 300-mm fabs, the report said.

The report added that TSMC cannot move ahead with the plan “until Taiwanese authorities approve the investment project.”
