Iraqi air defence site attacked

The Iraqi defence minister has tried to unite Arab opinion

Nearly 100 US and UK planes are reported to have taken part in an attack on a major Iraqi defence facility.
The operation, which targeted the main air defence command centre for western Iraq, is part of the enforcement of the air-exclusion zones over the country, allied military sources said.

However, BBC defence correspondent Andrew Gilligan says it seems to have been much larger than normal.

The raid comes as President George W. Bush steps up his campaign to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

He is expected to speak by telephone with key members of the UN Security Council on Friday to persuade them that military action against Iraq is essential.

France, Russia and China are all sceptical of the need for military action.
