I saw part of the debate, and read a review.

Interesting. Is your take that F is a very weak candidate and only getting this far because of T's weaknesses? The Times article on the debate was very weak; someone who simply did not know politics.

As for the Republican nomination campaigns, they had three candidates, the best of which for their national election purposes was Diane Allen (I think that's her name) but she was too moderate for the increasingly strident right wing portions of the Jersey party. That lost them the gubernatorial election and is likely to lose this one. Allen was smooth (a former radio-tv personality), smart (the two don't usually go together, I know), and would have made the argument that a vote for T was a vote against Lott and Republican control of the government, more difficult to make.

Since no one actually watches these debates, the only thing that matters in them is if someone makes a huge mistake. F did not do that last night so his odd demeanor and lack of knowledge about legislative issues probably won't hurt him. The major thing T has going for him is that Jersey continues to be more moderate than most states and the Reps continue to select right wingers for statewide elections. Whitman may be the last of the statewide moderate Republicans for a while.

If the Dems hold the Senate, don't start any Federal lawsuits. We won't have enough Judges around to handle them.

Bush, as I understand it, has gotten more appointments through the Judiciary committee then Clinton was able to at similar points in time. And Clinton was much more cooperative with Hatch than Bush has been with Leahy.
